Before the era of plastic hangers, quality timber hangers such as this were commonly supplied by outfitters, tailors and drapers. They were designed to properly support jackets and coats while also serving as subtle advertising within the store and in customers’ homes. Many were discarded as fashions and retail displays changed, making surviving examples increasingly difficult to find today. Comparable advertising hangers from historic Australian retailers are now held in museum collections as examples of early commercial advertising and retail history.
