Rare Australian Vintage Alphabet Nesting Cardboard Blocks | c.1948–1951

A wonderful survivor from Australia’s post-war years, this charming set of vintage nesting alphabet blocks captures the optimism and educational spirit of the late 1940s. Beautifully illustrated with native Australian wildlife, transport, occupations and everyday scenes, each cube was designed to encourage learning through imaginative play while introducing children to the alphabet.

Unlike many surviving alphabet blocks of the period, this delightful set includes distinctly Australian imagery such as Koala Bear, Platypus, and the famous Spirit of Progress—Victoria’s iconic streamlined express train. The inclusion of the Spirit of Progress, first introduced in 1937, strongly suggests the blocks were produced for the Australian market during the post-war toy manufacturing boom of the late 1940s. Following World War II, imported toys became scarce, leading many small Australian manufacturers and printers to create their own educational toys for a new generation of children. 

Printed in a striking palette of mustard yellow, teal blue, olive green and coral red, the illustrations have a wonderful mid-century charm and reflect the clean, optimistic graphic design that defined the era. From Y for Yacht and M for Motor Cycle to M for Merry-Go-Round, F for Fish, B for Boy on Bicycle, and S for Spirit of Progress, every face offers a delightful glimpse into Australian childhood over seventy years ago.

Each cube nests neatly inside the next, making the set both practical and beautifully sculptural when displayed. Whether styled in a nursery, children’s room, library or vintage toy collection, these blocks remain as charming today as when they first delighted Australian children.
